Chicken-of-the-Woods

Laetiporus sulphureus

18th September 2015, Knole Park, Sevenoaks
Growing on old fallen trunk. A very yellow specimen.

6th September 2015, Ladywell Fields
Growing at the base of a healthy Horse Chestnut. One cluster tiny and young, one old. Young cluster 7cm across. Nice to see young and old together as books generally only ever show the young yellow lumpy ones. Spores 4.5-5.5µ x 3.5-4.5µ.

6th September 2014, Ladywell Fields
Growing at base of ash tree. Immature specimen 17cm across. Fungusy mushroom smell. Four of the photos are from 2 weeks later when it had become a very fine mature specimen.

15th October 2013, Ladywell Fields
Growing on an old pollarded sycamore. One. 30cm across. I didn’t eat this one as it’s on a busy path and probably covered in dog pee. ID is almost sure.

25th August 2013, Wepham Wood near Angmering
Growing on oak tree root. Had the colour and texture of Chicken-of-the-Woods although rather too small for that species, so I’m not sure. ID is possible.

7th August 2013, Mill Wood, Gower in Wales
Growing on oak tree. Slightly sour taste but good texture. Eaten. ID is almost sure.
